Amos Wakesa, a key organiser of the Rwenzori Marathon, has revealed that the 2025 event has already drawn registrations from runners in at least 10 countries, just two weeks after registration opened on February 23.

“The numbers are looking good. So far, we have registrations from runners in at least 10 countries within just two weeks,” Wakesa said.

The 4th edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is scheduled for August 23, 2025, building on the success of the 2024 event, which attracted over 3,500 runners from 34 countries.

“The 2024 marathon shocked many, including our Kenyan friends like Raymond Otieno,” Wakesa noted. “The challenge is that after running 28km, the hill challenge begins, testing both physical endurance and mental fortitude. Runners like Otieno are already preparing better for 2025.”

Wakesa also highlighted the marathon’s growing impact on Uganda’s tourism sector. “Recently, the Ministry of Tourism made a financial contribution to support the Rwenzori Marathon, recognizing its potential as a game-changer for adventure tourism,” he shared.

He recounted a story of nine tourists from the USA who embarked on a six-day expedition to the Rwenzori Mountains after learning about the marathon. “When I asked what inspired their journey, they credited the Rwenzori Marathon campaign. It introduced them to Uganda’s hidden gem—the majestic Rwenzori Mountains—and they extended their stay to explore more of the country’s stunning landscapes,” Wakesa explained.

The marathon features various distances, including 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km (full marathon) events. In 2024, local runners Abel Chelangat and Emily Chebet won the men’s and women’s 42km races, respectively.

The event also partnered with the Rotary Cancer Run to raise awareness and funds for cancer prevention.

Wakesa expressed confidence in the marathon’s continued growth, expecting even more participants and countries than the 3,700 runners from 33 countries in the last edition.

“The event will grow, further boosting tourism and health awareness in Uganda,” he concluded.
