So far, 100 clubs and schools have confirmed their participation in the Hariet Apako Handball Memorial Championship, slated for November 23 to 24.

The two-day tournament will take place at the Soroti City Sports Ground, attracting players from primary, secondary, tertiary, and university levels across the country.

“It is very essential to remember our fallen stars. Apako was a star who contributed immensely to the development of handball in the country. She played her part, and by remembering her, it’s a sign to the young handball players that if you utilize your talent well, you will always be appreciated,” said Simon Opolot, Eastern Uganda Handball Coordinator.

According to Opolot, the 8th edition of the championship is an annual event organized by the Uganda Handball Federation in memory of the fallen handball and netball player who died in 2015 after participating in the Netball World Cup held in Sydney, Australia.

Emmanuel Odelle, handball coach at Wera Technical and champions of the 7th edition last year, believes that his team is set to retain the trophy this year.

“For the last six months, the team has been preparing for the games, giving them enough confidence to retain the trophy again,” Odelle said.

“As Soroti City authorities, we are delighted to have such an activity conducted in the area. We have already ensured that facilities such as playing courts, tents, and chairs are in place for the successful event,” said Patty Emokor, Soroti City Education Officer.

Emokor noted that the Apako Memorial Tournament will be an avenue for discovering hidden talents from upcountry players.

In other categories, Soroti SS took double honors in the secondary schools’ categories, while Opar and Kichinjaji primary schools won at the primary level for boys and girls, respectively.

The championship is expected to be graced by Sheila Agonzibwe, President of the Uganda Handball Federation, along with other dignitaries such as political leaders, religious leaders, civil servants, and community members.
