The youth of Uganda have been cautioned against misusing social media platforms to spread propaganda, abuse, and manipulate others, particularly those who could help them achieve their goals.

David Mugarra, the Programs Manager at the National Institute of Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), emphasised the importance of using digital tools positively to influence development.

This was during a fireplace meeting for youth leaders from across the country, which was held at Kolping Hotel in Masindi town on Thursday evening, September 17, 2025, ahead of today's youth day celebrations.

Mugera encouraged the youth to harness the power of social media for mobilisation and coordination, focusing on developmental activities rather than spreading negativity.

"Use your gadgets to influence positively and engage in activities that benefit your communities," he advised.

He also warned the youth against being manipulated into violent activities ahead of the forthcoming elections, stressing the need for peaceful participation.

The youth expressed concerns over high taxes, which they believe are stifling their small businesses.

Abdul Hakim Ssenyonjo, a youth leader from Central Kampala, questioned the tax burden, noting that many young entrepreneurs struggle to keep their businesses afloat.

The youth also raised concerns about the increasing number of street children in Kampala and other upcoming cities, warning that if left unaddressed, this could pose a security threat.

Government's role in supporting youth

Youth and Children Affairs Minister Balaam Barugahara urged the youth to focus on starting small businesses rather than relying solely on government employment.

"Stop lamenting and start small. Let's create jobs by starting small projects," he said.

Mondo Kyateka, the Assistant Commissioner for Youth and Children Affairs, emphasised the need for a mindset shift from "impossible" to "possible" and encouraged the youth to work in groups and take calculated risks.

The event was part of the lead-up to the Youth Day celebrations, scheduled to take place at Masindi Golf Course, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the chief guest.

Pre-activities, including zebra crossing painting, donating basic needs to the sick, tree planting, and a football gala, have already been conducted.

This year's International Youth Day theme, "Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond," highlights the crucial role youth play in driving progress at the community level. The event aims to inspire young people to take action and contribute to achieving the SDGs.
