Construction of the sh170b water pipeline project from Karuma to Gulu city is nearly complete.

According to Ivan Tekakwo, the Northern area spokesperson for the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, work on the project that was launched in March 2023 is now at 70%.

He adds that civil and concrete works on the water reservoir tank being built near the customs corner in Bardege-Layibi division is virtually complete and the contractor is now working on the technical aspects.

It is projected that on completion, Gulu city’s water production capacity will increase from 10 million litres to 30 million litres per day.

For the past decade, Gulu has faced periodic water shortages as water levels drop in most of the nearby water sources.

The Karuma-Gulu water project is being undertaken by Sogea Satom, a French construction company which is working on the water reservoir in Gulu city and Denys NV which is laying the water pipelines from Karuma to Gulu.

It is projected that if all goes as per the working plan, the KFW and World Bank funded project should be commissioned in November 2024.
