SafeBoda Uganda has launched an EV (Electric Vehicle) tier passenger service for environmentally conscious passengers.

The EV bikes are meant to promote e-mobility and combat climate change while fostering awareness and adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday at SafeBoda Academy in Kyebando, Dr Monica Musenero the minister for Science, Technology and Innovation said that the e-mobility option is impressive and commended SafeBoda for the innovation.

“This innovative step empowers customers to embrace the campaign on protecting the environment,” she said.

Dr Musenero highlighted that the government spends a lot of funds in buying fuel and sustain the district motorcycles and hinted on the plan to adopt EV bikes for districts to cut government budget on fuel.

“Government is always buying motorcycles for the districts and one of the challenges is sustaining them with fuel, such initiative will cut government spending on fuel, E-mobility has been identified as qualitative leap,” she added.

SafeBoda Country Director Catherine Kafumbe said that the transportation sector requires a lot of awareness on e-mobility.

“We have experienced a lot of challenges in line with fuel prices and this is a great step in the right direction, it’s a step towards every Ugandan to start appreciating green energy transportation,” she said.

She added that the initiative also saves drivers and riders more than 30% on fuel as EV tier allows drivers to switch to electric bodas and increase their incomes by having access to safeboda customers.

It is estimated that there are over one million motorcycles are on the roads in Uganda with less than 1% of them being electric, with about 750,000 operating in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso districts. This means there is a market for hundreds of new electric boda bodas in Kampala over the next two years.
