New UICT governing council sworn in

The 17-member team will be in charge of steering the entity for the next three years.

KAMPALA - The new governing council of the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) has been sworn in.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted on Friday by Timothy Lumunye, the Acting Senior Principal Magistrate Grade 1.

The 17-member team will be in charge of steering the entity for the next three years.

It comprises Assoc. Prof Agnes Rwashana Semwanga, Barbara Asimwe,  and Patrick Kakeeto. Others are Amos Mpungu, Japeth Kawanguzi, Dean Munene, John Ochira Pakony and Ronald Mwayambala.

Also on the team is Eng. Christine Mugimba, Moses Mugenyi, Gloria Bako, Edson Nkurunungi, Anthony Muligisa, Rhoda Christine, Jennifer Namugumya, Irene Nakiyimba and Dr Fredrick Kitoogo.

Section 77(2) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 provides that there shall be established for each Tertiary Institution a governing council composed of various categories of persons. These categories are supposed to be nominated by the different constituencies.

They include one person representing a public University to which the institution is affiliated; two persons having made personal contributions to the development of agriculture, industry, technology, education or commerce in Uganda, one of whom shall be a woman and a representative of the relevant professional body to the Tertiary Institution.

Others include a representative of the District Council in which the tertiary institution is situated; the Principal and Deputy Principal of the Tertiary Institution; a representative of the Ministry responsible for Higher Education; and a representative of the Ministry responsible for the field of study undertaken by the Tertiary Institution.

Also included on the member committee are two representatives of the academic staff of the Institution, one of whom shall be a woman; a representative of the non-teaching staff of the Tertiary Institution; three representatives of the Student’s Association one of whom shall be a woman; and a representative of the alumni of the Tertiary Institution.

Founded in 2000, UICT’s mandate is to establish, manage and operate government communication services training centres. It also provides education and training in all fields related to the communications sector including telecommunications services, computer engineering, information technology and business management.
