President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has met a team of scientists and members of the innovation support ecosystem, led by Dr Monica Musenero, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, at State House Entebbe.

During the meeting on Saturday, the scientists briefed the President on progress towards the National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s vision of transforming Uganda into a science-led modern economy.

They highlighted achievements in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, production of diagnostic kits, standardisation of natural medicines, and innovations in machine-building technologies.

On his part, the President commended the scientists for “finally waking up” to their role in national transformation, assuring them of continued government support for their efforts.

On the issue of human capital, Museveni urged them to move beyond blaming colonialism, emphasising that Uganda must harness its traditional knowledge, mechanise it, and standardise it in order to create wealth and prosperity.

Minister Musenero thanked the President for his consistent support to science, technology and innovation. She said her team is on the right track in embracing a science-led approach to development.

'Clear vision'

The meeting happened a day after Museveni commissioned the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja.

During the commissioning on Friday, the President said his government has "a clear vision for what will transform our society".

"Uganda's economy is currently growing at 7% and is expected to exceed 10% once our oil production begins," he said.

"We also plan to process our rich iron ore reserves into high-quality steel, which will significantly reduce our dependence on steel imports that currently cost over 900 million US dollars annually. Uganda is fortunate to have some of the best iron ore in the world, located in Kabale and Butogota."

The President said the demand for electric vehicles highlights Uganda's need for lithium, "which we are blessed to have in substantial deposits in Ntungamo and other regions".

He hailed Makerere University, Kiira Motors, and the National Enterprise Corporation, whose achievements he said "prove that success is possible, breaking down the barriers of doubt and demonstrating that we can indeed realise our potential".
