Uganda’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Paul Amoru, has also presented his letters of credence to Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi in the capital, Gaborone.

A statement issued by Uganda’s High Commission in Pretoria said on Thursday that it was a moment filled with diplomatic importance and solemn reflection.

It also said the occasion saw Amoru convey warm regards from President Yoweri Museveni along with his best wishes for the enduring relationship between the two sister countries.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence to honour the passing of Namibia’s President Hage Geingob, who was remembered as a distinguished statesman and a symbol of the liberation struggle.

“This gesture set the tone for a ceremony marked by respect and significance. President Masisi warmly welcomed Ambassador Amoru and expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the warm reception and hospitality he accorded to him while in Kampala on the sidelines of the 19th Non-Aligned Movement summit and the 3rd South Summit of the Group of 77+ China,” the statement said.

In January, President Museveni hosted Masisi in a strategic bilateral meeting underlining the strong ties between the two nations.

Bilateral discussions held during the two summits brought to light key areas of collaboration between Botswana and Uganda, including the urgent need for intervention in the current outbreak of foot and mouth diseases in Uganda, as well as potential partnerships in the dairy industry and animal health technology transfer.

President Masisi also visited the Makerere University Innovation Hub, Kiira Motors Corporation Plant and the Source of the River Nile in Jinja.

Amoru expressed gratitude that the home Botswana has provided to hundreds of Ugandans working in various sectors, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between the two countries.

He also took the opportunity to present the letters of recall of his predecessor, Barbra Nekesa Oundo, and the letters of credence appointing him as High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Uganda to Botswana.

The statement said the ceremony concluded with expressions of thanks and a reaffirmation of commitment to strengthening the bilateral ties between Botswana and Uganda through the establishment of a joint commission for cooperation to provide and deepen collaboration in various sectors starting with agriculture.

“This significant event marks a new chapter in the diplomatic relations between the two sister countries, paving the way for deeper cooperation and mutual benefit,” it said.

Amoru is also Uganda's High Commissioner to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Eswatini.
