Yowania Nanyonga: The woman who made Ugandans eat soil

“Some people got the soil and sold it to others who could not manage to stand in the lines. Ugandans who saw the business opportunity set up shops 2km away in Lutunku trading centre. The roaring business was goats’ meat and soda, with trucks filled with soda coming all the way from Kampala. More than 1,000 people squeezed themselves into Nanyonga’s compound,” Seguya recalled.

Nanyonga (Pictured) died quietly in 2000 aged about 71, far removed from the frenzy that once surrounded her. Her family later sold the land and relocated to Lutunku trading centre.
