Kampala city generates over 1500 tons of waste every day and it is estimated that in urban areas, waste generation per capita stands at around one kilogram per day, the NEMA Executive Director, Dr. Akankwasa Barirega said when contacted.

Kampala Capital City Authority is crying foul over unlimited funding to purchase the required 100 garbage vehicles to transport garbage from slum areas to Kiteezi landfill, a few kilometers away from the city centre.

"We need 100 trucks of garbage such that every division gets like five trucks to consistently manage waste which is piling every day and mismanaged by city dwellers,” Erias Lukwago, the Lord Mayor for Kampala said.

As a result of such deficiencies, slum dwellers are always forgotten when it comes to normal collection of garbage rendering community settlements vulnerable to unbearable stench and waterborne disease outbreaks.

It is from this background that our reporter Isaac Nuwagaba moved through the suburbs of Kansanga, Kabalagala, Namuwongo and Bugolobi to the shock of his life.

Mary Akankwasa, a resident in Kansanga said that too much garbage has become feeding plates for stray animals like goats, marabou stocks, cows and street kids as seen below in pictures.
