Behind the polished public image, many legislators are privately battling mounting debts, relentless financial obligations and economic anxiety severe enough to force some into selling property, borrowing from moneylenders or depending on political patrons for survival.
For some legislators, getting a seat in the august House is seen as an opportunity for financial relief. Even with some of the highest earnings in the country, some lawmakers, particularly first-time MPs, can easily get drowned in debt for the entirety of their term.
