Uganda is among 17 countries confirmed to compete in this year’s All Africa Junior Golf Team Championship due at the Benoni Country Club in Johannesburg, April 21-26.

The championship doubles as a qualifier for Japan's annual Toyota Junior Golf World Cup.

Defending champions South Africa will lead the charge alongside other entrants including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mauritius, Reunion, Botswana, Egypt, Morroco, Tunisia, Ghana, Tanzania, Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, and Namibia.

11 Countries have entered both boys' and girls' teams with six including Uganda entering only boys' teams.

“We have received 17 country confirmations and are happy with this record entry. This is a clear manifestation of the growing appetite to develop Junior Golf in Africa by all active golfing nations, and Africa's future in Golf lies in the Junior Golfers,” Africa Golf Confederation president Johnson Omollo stated.

“We continue to appeal for support towards the Africa Golf Confederation from like-minded stakeholders and governments keen to grow Golf in Africa. We are grateful to Golf RSA for accepting to host this year's edition.

“We can only better this journey year on year through active mobilisation of affiliates' participation in our regional and continental events that are played annually and bi-annually,” Omollo added.

Recently the Uganda Golf Union organized qualifiers to select the Ugandan juniors who will try to replicate what Reagan Akena, Juma Abiti, Ibrahim Ssemakula, and Abdu Kakeeto achieved last year by qualifying for the World Cup.

The youngsters who made it through the first round of qualifiers include; Charles Jjunju, Cosmas Ociti, Collins Matovu, Miracle Agotre, Brian Mande, Asuman Tumwesigye, and Ibrahim Ssemakula.

After the second round of qualifiers, it is now Brian Mande, Charles Jjunju, Collins Matovu, and Ibrahim Ssemakula who made the team while the girls' team will have Winnie Musuya and Rachael Natukunda

Matovu and Ssemakula were on the team that finished the 12th Ishino Course in Japan.

Uganda has twice competed at the World Cup including the first time in 2019.
