National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi has told the people of the former Luweero triangle that they got a raw deal from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government despite their support during the liberation war.
Kyagulanyi said while on a campaign trail in Nakaseke on Thursday, October 09, that the NRM's reference to Luweero as their political Mecca is a mockery, considering what is on the ground.
"Are these the type of roads or health centres one would expect to find in a political Mecca. This is not the usual election where the ruling party usually manipulates. This is going to be a protest vote. Use this chance to change your fate for the better to reject Museveni and reclaim the area's divinity," Kyagulanyi said at a rally he addressed at Kamuli play grounds, Kikamulo sub-county in Nakaseke central constituency.
Business came to a standstill in several towns as the NUP leader and his supporters moved across the region before addressing his main rally at Kamuli. There was a heavy deployment of armed police and UPDF soldiers to deter violence or accidents.
Kyagulanyi said the blood the people of the former war zone shed was in vain because the region was worse off than what it was before the war.
Kyagulanyi also said the 63 years of independence that Ugandans celebrated were meaningless because nothing had been achieved in terms of self-determination.
"'We can not talk of independence where we don't have a right to self-determination. Instead of celebrating, we should be mourning because of our people who died in vain," he added.
"I want you to rise and fight for real independence," he said.
The Nakaseke central MP, Allan Mayanja, said the people of the area were languishing in poverty and had been rendered homeless after their bibanja were grabbed.
Mayanja also said the entire Kiwoko town council had neither a government secondary school nor a government Health centre III.
