A National Unity Platform lord councillor in Kampala and member of the party's election management committee, who is charged with inciting violence, has been further remanded in Luzira Prison for two weeks.
John Mary Ssebuufu, who represents Nakawa West, appeared before Nakawa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, February 17, for the hearing of his bail application.
His lawyer, Kakuru Tumusiime, told the media that they were ready to proceed with the bail application, but the state argued that it had failed to access documents for the hearing from the Electronic Court Case Management Information System.
ECCMIS is a fully featured system that automates and tracks all aspects of a case life cycle.
As a result, the Grade One Nakawa Magistrate, Frank Namanya, further remanded Ssebuufu until March 3, 2026.
He had been in detention for three weeks before he was first produced in court on February 6, 2026. A habeas corpus petition challenging his detention had been filed in the High Court, which was expected to rule on the matter on the same day he was arraigned.
The state argues that Ssebuufu, who is also the NUP vice president for the Buganda region, in the months of November and December 2025, at various places in Kampala, Mukono, Masaka and Mpigi, incited people to attack supporters of the National Resistance Movement party based on their political opinion.
He, however, denies the charges.
