National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is switching campaign gears today (Saturday), with the districts of Bududa and Namisindwa his next stop in his reelection bid.
Both districts were carved out of Manafwa district in a bid to extend services further to the grassroots. Bududa gained district status much earlier, in 2006, and Namisindwa in 2017.
Most households are engaged mainly in agriculture, with emphasis on food crops such as bananas, cassava and sweet potatoes.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala, the 2016 results from the participatory assessments indicated that Bududa was so vulnerable to landslides, mudslides, flash floods, rock falls and soil erosion due to the steep slopes, vegetation loss as a result of increased degradation on hill slopes.
Several incidents of landslides were reported, with the worst one occurring on March 1, 2010, in Namesti and Matuwa villages in Bukalasi and Bumayoka sub-counties, respectively. As many as 365 people were reported to have lost their lives in that disaster.
Bududa has a population of 268,970 people spread out across 28 sub-counties/town councils, 160 parishes and 1,442 villages.
In the 2021 general election, the district had 78,039 registered voters. Out of these, 46,547 (63.7%) voted.
In that election, Museveni polled 29,224 (64.8%) votes while his closest challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP), garnered 14,666 (32.5%).
Bududa now has a total of 91,058 voters and 266 polling stations, up from 208 in 2021.
In Namisindwa, there are 257,346 people living in 29 sub-counties/town councils, 163 parishes and 1,547 villages.
In the 2021 general election, the district had 97,191 registered voters. Out of these, 58,675 (60.4%) voted.
Museveni won here with 40,563 (73.3%) votes while Kyagulanyi got 12,780 (23.1%).
Namisindwa now has a total of 116,258 voters, with 302 polling stations, up from 254 in 2021.
Museveni is campaigning for a seventh term under the theme: Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.
The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements in the last 39 years, such as peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to a high middle-income status.
