Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, who also serves as the second national vice chairperson (female) of the ruling NRM party, has pledged to use her office to groom and nurture newly elected legislators.
“When you come to Parliament, we shall make sure that we support you, nature you and support Busia. We shall also nurture and support other newly elected legislators,” Among said on February 7, 2026, while addressing a large gathering of NRM supporters at the party thanksgiving ceremony held at Buwanda Primary School playgrounds in Masafu town council, Busia district.
Among said the thanksgiving event was organised to celebrate President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM party following their strong performance in the recently concluded 2026 general elections, noting that the party secured 65 per cent of the vote in Busia district.

“We are here today in Busia celebrating because the NRM party won massively in the recently concluded general elections. In Busia, NRM won by 65%,” she said.
Among also commended the NRM secretary general, Richard Todwong, for his role in delivering the party’s victory.
“Thank you for protecting the party from the independents, grooming the new party members and delivering a 71% victory for the President. We were all on the campaign team, but if it wasn’t for you being organised, we wouldn’t have managed to deliver such a victory,” Among said.
She further praised Barbara Nekesa Ounda, the party’s National treasurer, for organising the thanksgiving event, adding that leaders have a responsibility to contribute to the development of their home areas.
“We are not going campaigning. We are going to continue fulfilling our pledges, and when President Yoweri Museveni contests for another term, he will get 95% just like what he scored in Bukedea,” Among said.
She reiterated her commitment, both as Speaker of Parliament and as the NRM’s second national vice chairperson (female), to mentor and support newly elected legislators.
Addressing the same gathering, Todwong said the party campaigns had been vibrant and engaging, and praised Among for standing firmly with the party chairman, who also served as the NRM presidential flag bearer, as well as other party candidates.
“We wish you a safe 12th Parliament where you will be its speaker,” Todwong said, adding that Busia district had set the pace for other areas during the presidential campaigns.
Nekesa said it would have been unfair for the NRM party not to return and thank Ugandans for voting for President Museveni and other party flag bearers.

“For the past years, the NRM party has never scored 71% in the presidential race. It would be unfair and unjust if we do not thank the Ugandans who turned up in large numbers to vote for us,” Nekesa said.
She added that the party’s mobilisation for the 2026 elections had been more structured than in previous polls, which contributed to the decisive victory.
The national treasurer noted that peace and security, development and poverty eradication were among the key factors that influenced voters to overwhelmingly support the NRM party.
Meanwhile, female workers' Member of Parliament Fiona Nakku assured Among of full support in the speakership race, saying the NRM party recognises the importance of the leadership role she plays for Ugandans.
