Police in the Rwenzori East region have confirmed the arrest of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party registrar for Ibanda-Kyanya Town Council in Busongora North County, Kasese district, for allegedly causing the disappearance of 15 NRM registers belonging to 15 villages.

Speaking to New Vision at their Kasese Municipality-based headquarters, Rwenzori East regional police spokesperson, Nelson Tumusiime, identified the suspect as Moris Kitenge, a resident of the same area.

The incident came to light on the morning of Tuesday, May 6, as the NRM internal elections commenced across the country. Locals from the affected villages discovered that their registers were missing and immediately alerted the relevant authorities.

"We are condemning him for tampering with the electoral rules and guidelines as set by the top NRM Secretariat," Tumusiime said.

"We are also trying hard to recover the missing registers so that the affected villages also participate in the exercise," he added.

Tumusiime appealed to the general public to continue cooperating with security personnel in reporting any electoral irregularities to ensure the process runs smoothly. He urged voters to remain calm, participate freely, and not be alarmed by the presence of police in their respective areas.

"As usual, it is our mandate to keep law and order," he said.
