KAMULI - First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has launched an intensified door-to-door mobilisation drive in the Busoga sub-region to rally support for President Yoweri Museveni's re-election in the upcoming January 15, 2026, general elections.

Addressing members of the presidential task force in Busoga sub-region during the campaign launch dubbed “Mama Kadaga Asabye Busoga LONDA M7”, Kadaga emphasised the need for grassroots efforts in the final two weeks before polling day. She also launched a Drone vehicle that is going to be used in canvassing votes for President Museveni in Busoga.

"We have agreed that in these final two weeks, there should be an intensified campaign," she said, urging supporters to account for neighbours and relatives by encouraging them to vote and tracking turnout from each household at polling stations.

Kadaga outlined district-specific voter turnout targets previously set by the party, calling on task force members to meet or exceed them. Some districts aim for near 100% participation, while others target at least 65-70%.

"I want them to meet the targets which we set centrally so that we achieve a quite high rate," she added.

Highlighting voter protection, Kadaga assured supporters that government security, including the Uganda Police Force, would prevent intimidation.

She added that communication networks at the parish level, supported by transport like motorcycles, will relay reports upward, and trained observers will monitor polling stations to ensure compliance with electoral laws.

"This time round, with door-to-door campaigns, we want to ensure there's a personal touch, a personal message to everybody," Kadaga stressed, encouraging direct outreach to undecided or reluctant voters.

The launch comes just days after President Museveni directed the dissolution of the controversial Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) on December 26th, replacing it with a new marine battalion amid complaints of harassment from fishing communities—a move several speakers hailed as timely.

State Minister for Agriculture Fred Bwino Kyakulaga expressed delight over the disbandment, noting it addressed long-standing grievances among fishermen on lakes like Kyoga and Victoria.

“The Basoga are happy that President Museveni directed that the new landing site committees be composed of representatives of indigenous fishing communities alongside investors operating in the fisheries sector, a move aimed at restoring harmony and improving governance at landing sites,” Kyakulaga said.

Ruth Namukobe, an aspirant for the Kaliro District Woman MP seat under the NRM flag, praised the decision, saying it resolved issues raised by fishermen.

"Right now, the fishermen, at least our problem is being solved, I call upon you on the 15th of January, 2026, to vote for President Museveni," she urged.

Bernard Mugoya Mutebi, NRM aspirant for Bulamogi Constituency in Kaliro District, echoed the sentiment, targeting 90% turnout.

"We had a problem of fishing around the lakesides, but we are happy right now that the President has removed that group," he said, crediting the reform for boosting support among lakeside communities.

Mutebi pledged to base his mobilisation on the NRM manifesto and personal commitments.

Present at the launch were Luuka South legislator Stephen Kisa Bakubalwayo, who is also the Luuka district NRM chairperson, Peter Kisambira, the chairperson of the Presidential task force in Busoga sub-region and Busoga Kingdom’s Minister of Tourism, Princess Hellen Namutamba.
