The National Resistance Movement party (NRM) has dominated the delegates council of the non-unionised workers of Wakiso district in a secret ballot held at the Electoral Commission offices in Wakiso.

The elections took place earlier Friday, August 22, amidst tight security from the Uganda Police. Wakiso district returning officer Tolbert Musinguzi, together with Andrew Bwanika, presided over the polls.

The workers’ council consists of 10 members. NRM candidates who won all the seats are: Grace Nandawula, Sulaiman Walusimbi, Ronald Ssemwaka, Henry Kajubi Nyangu, Edison Lubwama, Brown Paul Mutesasira, Lamech Kawooya, Janet Brenda Atukunda, Jassy Birungi and Genevine Nabasuuta. Two candidates contested as independents, while other political parties were not represented.

The elected members will join members from other districts to elect the National Workers’ Member of Parliament.

Musinguzi explained that the eligible voters were those who work for private companies or those who are self-employed but not in any union.

“The elections started at the town council/ sub-county level, where 10 members were elected. In all the 27 town councils/sub-counties we have in Wakiso district, a delegation of 270 members was elected and they have been elected peacefully,” he added.

Musinguzi also urged political parties to vet their candidates in time for proper and timely nominations ahead of the 2026 general elections.

He said that it’s just a week to nominations, but some political parties haven’t finalised the vetting process, which he said could disturb the process if they don't do it quickly.
