NAMUTUMBA - Housing state minister Persis Namuganza has emerged victorious in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) sub-county elections held in Namutumba district.

Namuganza, who is also Bukono County Woman Member of Parliament (MP), swept the polls with a commanding margin against her rivals, further solidifying her political influence in the region ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Namuganza was contesting for the Ivukula sub-county secretary for Finance post in the NRM lower local council elections, a post she has always held.

During the elections, which were presided over by NRM register Monica Muweesi, held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, saw a big turnout where Namuganza polled 187 votes, beating her opponent Emma Basooma, who polled 12 votes only.

Shortly after the announcement of her win, Namuganza thanked her supporters for the continued trust and pledged to work even harder for the development of Namutumba.

“I am humbled by the confidence the people of Ivukula sub-county and Namutumba district at large have shown me. This victory is not mine alone, it’s a win for every ordinary citizen who believes in transformative leadership,” she said.

With this win, Namuganza now strengthens her position within the party structures, where she is now positioning herself for greater political engagement at both district and national levels within the party.

During the same election, Christopher Muwandisi was elected as the Ivukula sub-county NRM chairperson with 141 votes, beating his rival, who got 51 votes.

For Ivukula town council, Tiime Muzungu with 187 votes emerged winner as chairperson, trouncing Ali Walwasa with 12 votes only.

Namuganza praised her constituents for the landslide victory but decried the chaos that marred the elections, fueled internally.

She urged saboteurs to embrace the peace. This was echoed by Resident District Commissioner Fredrick Bangu.

The NRM sub-county elections are part of the internal party processes of identifying grassroots leaders and consolidating support ahead of the upcoming general national elections.
