With Uganda’s 2026 general elections just days away on January 15, top National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders have stormed the heart of Wakiso district, rallying supporters at Works Playgrounds in Entebbe municipality and Kitebi Primary School in Rubaga division.

Wakiso, a key urban and peri-urban district surrounding Kampala, remains a politically significant battleground.

In the 2021 presidential election, the district, with 1,154,857 registered voters, delivered a strong showing for opposition candidate Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform.

Official results from the Electoral Commission showed Kyagulanyi securing 425,002 votes (75.69%), while Museveni received 122,505 votes (21.82%).

Patrick Oboi Amuriat of the Forum for Democratic Change garnered 3,730 votes (0.66%), with the remainder split among the other candidates and invalid ballots.

NRM leaders are using the rallies to urge voters to shift allegiance and support Candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the party's flagbearer, emphasising development promises, security, and warnings against opposition policies.

NRM secretary general Richard Todwong struck an optimistic tone, declaring that the party had already begun celebrating victory.

Speaking at Works playgrounds in Entebbe, he praised the residents as good neighbours to President Museveni and asserted that Ugandans nationwide would deliver an overwhelming mandate.

We have moved with the president all over Uganda, and the people of Uganda are going to vote for President Museveni overwhelmingly. The people of Entebbe, you are the owners of the seat and we cannot allow the opposition to take it. We have started celebrating victory. NRM is going to win and it's time to celebrate. Me, I have come to dance,” Todwong said.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among delivered a fiery address, directly challenging Wakiso voters to reject the opposition.

She contrasted the NRM's record of stability with what she described as risks of insecurity and unrest under opposition leadership.

“How about you people in Wakiso? What are you saying? If you don't give Museveni your vote, you will be giving it to the person who wants to bring insecurity to our country... For us in the East, we are ready to vote Museveni,” Among told the crowd.

Among further highlighted infrastructure developments in the area, including the expansion of Entebbe International Airport, which she said is now in Phase two, improvements to Entebbe Hospital, road upgrades, such as the shillings 35 billion Lubugumu-Busalala Road in Makindye, shillings 33 billion Namasuba Road, and shillings 21 billion for Nakiwoogo and Sebugwaawo roads.

She also defended and promised enhancements to the Parish Development Model (PDM), noting that President Museveni intends to increase funding to benefit more groups, including boda boda riders, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and youth.

Among urged voters to support NRM candidates from head to bottom for sober heads in Parliament capable of making laws to protect land and promote humanity.

Criticising past opposition figures and alleged mismanagement, she referenced the Kiteezi landfill tragedy, claiming funds meant for improvements were misused, and contrasted it with NRM's development focus.

President Museveni, the NRM flagbearer seeking another term, has framed his 2026 campaign around protecting national gains and accelerating progress toward middle-income status.
