In commemoration of this year's International Women’s Day celebrations, the Ugandan Parliament will host the 2nd Women’s Parliament Sitting on March 3.

Speaker Anita Among informed Parliament that among the invited guests are district women counsellors chairpersons, and managers of wealth creation programmes.

The theme will be consolidating women social and economic gains in Uganda.

“We shall spend the whole day here at Parliament discussing women issues," said Among.

One woman will be given an opportunity to chair the session.

"The women local leaders will have an opportunity to discuss issues affecting them with their Women Members of Parliament. We want to ask the wealth empowerment programme managers to explain how the women have been empowered through these programmes."

The Speaker said that when the women are empowered, the nation will also be empowered.

Wakiso district Woman MP Betty Naluyima appealed to Parliament to advocate for the release of women that are reportedly in jail as a result of politics.

Kaberamaido County MP Alfred Edakasi noted that whereas there are many programmes out there for women, many have not benefitted from them due to stringent conditions, especially by banks.

The theme for this year's International Women's Day is "Accelerate Action", which calls for collective action to create a more equitable world and achieve gender equality.
