Many are in politics for personal gains, not service — Presidential aspirant Muntu

“Many people in politics are not genuine. They are bafele [fraudsters], meaning dishonest politicians who are in it for what they can get, not for what they can give,” Muntu insisted.

Presidential aspirant Maj. Gen. (rtd) Mugisha Muntu has launched a scathing attack on those in the political arena, accusing many of being motivated by personal gains rather than a desire to serve the public.

Muntu, who is the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) flag-bearer, made the remarks while addressing voters at Kamdini town council in Oyam district on November 4, 2025. He added that many politicians are more interested in lining their pockets with wealth and power than genuinely serving the people who elected them to power.

“Many people in politics are not genuine. They are bafele [fraudsters], meaning dishonest politicians who are in it for what they can get, not for what they can give,” he insisted.

They are more interested in accumulating wealth and power than in serving the people, betraying the trust that people have placed in them, he said.

Muntu lamented that the political landscape is filled with “fake” people who are interested in politics as a means to an end rather than a noble calling to serve others.

“Many are looking for leadership positions to become LC5 chairman, LC3 chairmen and Members of Parliament (MPs), but you can’t run every system on money,” he noted.

Out of 10 politicians, seven of them are in it for money and only three are serious about serving Ugandans, which you must watch during this election season, he cautioned.

However, New Vision Online could not independently verify the former army commander's claims about the majority of politicians in Uganda.

Muntu’s remarks come at a time when Uganda is grappling with widespread corruption and poor governance among politicians.

Honest politicians have shunned politics

Due to public demand for free money from political leaders, Muntu said the majority of honest politicians to withdrawn from elective politics because they do not want to associate with ‘dirty’ politics.

To reverse what Muntu calls 'the drug stockouts in health centres, poor schooling standards, poor roads, lack of connectivity to electricity, there has to be honest leadership among all tribes in this country'.

"That’s why I am here to ask for your vote".

According to Muntu, if a leader has no self-restraint, self-control and without any mechanism to control those who steal public resources, 'we shall never develop as a country'.

Co-operative movements

Muntu promised to construct modern facilities for storage of agricultural produce and with 'my government support, we shall revive co-operative movements to fight for the resilience of our economy, which is trapped in debt'.

“We shall pay teachers well, pay our health workers, develop farmers and traders, and once we have developed people, the country will develop to the middle-income status,” he said.

Even if you tarmac all the roads in Uganda and give power to every sub-county, you will never develop Uganda without developing people’s capacity to work for themselves.

“I represent honest leadership, trust, hard work and accountability with many problems eating us due to the lack of trusted leaders who are greedy for money,” he said.

If I wanted, I would have remained with President Museveni in NRM [National Resistance Movement party] and we would have squeezed you from there, but my values could not allow such dishonesty. If you want the solution that can cure that, you need to vote for me and our frag bearers to usher in a new trusted change for Uganda.

At Atapara trading centre in Oyam district, Muntu pledged to give laptops to all secondary school students in the country to facilitate science and technology in the country.

“The only hope for our country shall be developed research which can help us build a resilient economy that stands modern challenges,” he assured.
