Today’s (July 24, 2024) National Resistance Movement (NRM) polls in Bardege–Layibi Division, Gulu city have been marred by the low turnout of the voters.
Ruling party NRM is today conducting the primary elections for flag-bearers across the country in 72,000 villages for district chairpersons, city mayors, city division mayors, district councillors, and city councillors, among others.
The primaries follow earlier ones of Members of Parliament a week ago.
Bardege-Layibi division has 19,743 registered voters across the 50 polling stations. However, those who participated in today’s polls are less than a quarter, according to the polling officials.
Concy Anena, a businesswoman and a voter at the Fourth Division Barracks polling station, said that though other voters opted to shun today’s exercise, she has to close her business to get time to vote for her candidates.
Susan Arach, a voter at Kaunda grounds polling station, said the strong manifestos of some candidates encouraged her to go and vote today.
Majuma Alezuyo, a resident of Kanyagoga Ward who votes from Kaunda grounds, told Radio Rupiny that she participated in today’s exercise since it is her right to vote for her candidates of choice.
Three candidates are vying for the party flag for Bardege-Layibi division mayoral position, and they include Alfred Oluba, Patrick Okello, and Robert Komakech.
