OKOLO — Peter Ogwang, on Friday (May 22), took oath as district chairperson of Dokolo district alongside 33 councilors.

Ogwang, a veteran journalist who previously served the same council, before diving into the NGO world, recited the oath at a function held at the district headquarters.

The oaths were conducted by the Lira Chief Magistrate, Joe Fay Adoko.

Bonny Alilo, a male workers' councilor, and Lameck Ongora, a male PWD representative, were elected unopposed as speaker and deputy speaker of the council, respectively.

After taking office, Ogwang nominated Tony Odongo Ocen, councilor of Agwata subcounty as vice-chairperson.

He went ahead and appointed Kia Florence Elupu, female representative of Bata Town Council and Bata subcounty as Secretary Finance and Administration, Joel Okuma Opota as Secretary Community Base,

Education and Health, and Esther Betty Ato for Works and Technical Services.

Addressing the council after swearing in, UPC’s Ocen promised to strengthen supervision to ensure transparency, accountability, and promote teamwork to improve the service delivery in the district.

The priority, he said, will be on improving performance in schools, highlighting that many schools in Dokolo district have been registering poor performance with no candidate scoring first grade, and that this calls for a deliberate effort to transform.

To the councilors he “advised people of Dokolo are looking up to you to perform the responsibility irrespective of the party affiliation, what we have come for is not employment but a service, and the service is to be for the people”.

Other focus, according to him, will be on roads and health sector improvement.

Dokolo RDC Barbra Akech tipped councilors to support the district security team in detecting and deterring drug theft that has become a big vice in many health facilities, and combat corruption in the implementation of the government programs at the low local government levels.

She also urged the new councilors to collaboratively work with the technical staff and MPs to attract resources to develop the people of Dokolo.

At the say function, the chairpersons LC3 were also sworn-in among the was a prominent radio presenter in Lira City, Julius Peter Odur, who took office as chairperson of Okwongodul subcounty after winning the recent election under NRM ticket.
