Kyagulanyi hails Kyadondo East for launching his political career

“Kyadondo East gave me a chance when many thought politics was reserved for career politicians. It is here that my political journey began, and it proved that ordinary Ugandans can also participate in shaping our nation,” said the popstar turned politician.

National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi has credited Kyadondo East Constituency for giving him a political lifeline, saying his entry into national politics proved that ordinary citizens, not career politicians, can shape the country’s leadership.

Speaking on Monday (December 1), during a campaign rally in Wakiso district, Kyagulanyi reflected on his 2017 victory in the Kyadondo East parliamentary by-election, which marked his formal entry into elective politics.

“Kyadondo East gave me a chance when many thought politics was reserved for career politicians. It is here that my political journey began, and it proved that ordinary Ugandans can also participate in shaping our nation,” said the popstar turned politician.

Kyagulanyi, who is contesting the presidency for a second time after his unsuccessful 2021 bid, urged more Ugandans to take an active interest in politics, emphasising that political participation is key to improving service delivery and governance.

He pointed out that political decisions determine whether hospitals have essential medicines, schools are equipped with learning materials, and infrastructure projects reach local communities.

The NUP leader, who campaigned at Kakajjo Primary School grounds and later at Nangabo in Wakiso, also stressed the importance of nonviolence and discipline during campaigns.

At the rally, Wakiso LC5 aspirant Najja Nasif highlighted persistent challenges in the district, including poor roads and frequent power outages, despite Wakiso being one of the region’s biggest revenue contributors.

“Up to sh15 trillion is collected from this district every year, yet only sh1b is returned for road works. That is not enough to construct even a single kilometre of road,” he said.

Voters attending the rally said the next president should prioritise fighting corruption and improving infrastructure.

Pauline Nalunga, a housewife, said, “If public funds were not diverted, hospitals would have drugs and schools would be better equipped.”

Truck driver Martin Kiggundu added, “The suburbs are often impassable. We need leaders who respect voters’ rights by providing services, not just collecting taxes.”

Kyagulanyi’s message to voters was clear: politics belongs to all Ugandans, and ordinary citizens can make a difference.
