Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among has said she has fulfilled her duties diligently.

She said this in a post on the X platform on Wednesday (May 13), a few hours after being sworn in for another five-year term as MP at the Parliament Building in Kampala.

“I sincerely thank the people of Bukedea for their trust and confidence in me to serve as their representative in Parliament during the previous term, and for granting me the opportunity to serve another term. I am confident that I have fulfilled my duties diligently,” she said.

She also expressed her gratitude to the Almighty God for His benevolence and the gift of life.

“I also wish to extend my congratulations to H.E. the President on his successful inauguration as President and Commander-in-Chief of our esteemed nation. Additionally, I offer my felicitations to all Ugandans.”

Among further thanked all security agencies for ensuring peace and stability in the country during the recent general elections and the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni.

Thanks, PLU chief

In another X post, Among expressed her “heartfelt gratitude” to the national vice-chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Michael Nuwagira aka Toyota, for supporting her during the swearing-in ceremony at Parliament as  Bukedea Woman MP.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my brother, chairman @chairtoyota, for taking the time to stand with me during my swearing-in today and for his unwavering support throughout the years. Your presence truly meant a lot to me.”

On Tuesday (May 12), PLU, a civic organisation, withdrew its support for Among’s candidacy for the Speaker of the 12th Parliament and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa.

Its chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the country’s Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, asked all MPs-elect who have a leaning towards it to support candidates Museveni will endorse for the two coveted seats in the new Parliament.

While officially opening the retreat on April 8, 2026, President Museveni, who is also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party national chairman, added some zing to the Speakership race when he remarked that the issue would be discussed at “the right time”.

He informed the retreat that the NRM’s central executive committee (CEC) just recommended on February 20, 2026, that the incumbent Speaker Anita Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa retain their seats in the 12th Parliament, as has been the tradition.

“This was our recommendation. It is not us who decides; we recommend, and then we can reason why. So, when the time comes, we shall be able to discuss it and explain why, but we are not the ones who elect. We recommend, and we support our recommendation with reasons,” Museveni said.

This was after one of the NRM MPs eyeing the seat of the Speaker, Alioni Yorke Odria (Aringa South), took to the microphone and called for rule of law and equity in the activities of CEC, the topmost organ of the party that has led Uganda uninterrupted for 40 years.

The race has so far attracted four other legislators, including outgoing justice minister Norbert Mao from the Democratic Party, Persis Namuganza (outgoing housing state minister), Lydia Wanyoto (Mbale City Woman MP-elect) and Florence Asiimwe Akiiki (Masindi Woman MP-elect).

All these were elected on the NRM ticket, save for Namuganza, who stood on an independent ticket after crying foul in the ruling party primaries.

However, the main battle over this seat is between Among and Mao, who have so far had a significant impact on the campaign.

The 12th Parliament of Uganda started today, with the swearing-in of new legislators in the sequence of alphabetical order, starting with surnames.

It is composed of 529 Members of Parliament (MPs), who will take the oath in three days running from today to May 15 at the Parliament Building in Kampala.
