KANUNGU - During his second last campaign rally in Kigezi sub-region, President Yoweri Museveni, who is the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential flag bearer, promised to financially support tea growers in Kanungu district.
He will achieve this through establishing a special fund to help farmers access affordable fertilisers.

“The tea growers told me that the costs of growing the cash crop have become too high, especially for large estates. We shall support them through their SACCOs, just as we are planning to support sugarcane growers and fishermen,” he explained.
The president was Wednesday, November 26, 2025 addressing supporters in Kanungu district at a largely attended rally at Rwere Playground.

He was accompanied by First Daughter, Pastor Patience Rwabwogo.
He was received by former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, NRM vice chairman (female), Anita Annet Among and her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, Secretary General Richard Todwong. The ministers who attended the rally included the Information and national guidance minister, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, and state minister for industry David Bahati.

The President first launched the National Backbone Infrastructure Extension to Kigezi sub-region.
Speaking in Runyankore-Rukiga, the President acknowledged that tea is the backbone of this area. He, however, suggested that residents with smaller land should adopt his four-acre model, which he said will help them get out of poverty.
Farmers in Kanungu and Western Uganda, in general, have in the past faced challenges of fluctuating prices, many times too low and unstable, which forced some of them to uproot their crops and switch to growing other crops like coffee and bananas.

They have also decried the cost of production, like high prices of fertilisers and seedlings.
Commenting on other critical issues, the President said that the NRM Government has ensured that Uganda remains peaceful, saying the people of Kanungu, who live near the DR Congo border, can be witnesses to how their neighbours have suffered for a long time due to constant wars.

He said that with peace for 40 years, Uganda has transformed in many aspects, including improving the country’s road infrastructure.
“We have improved our road network, and we shall upgrade more,” he pledged. He mentioned roads like the Hamurwa-Kerere-Kanungu road that goes to Butogota, Hamayanza to Ifasha, and the Ikunza road.

“We are going to work on that road,” he assured the supporters.
Earlier, several artists entertained the youthful audience, including Dr. Jose Chameleone, Eddy Kenzo, Weasel Mayanja, Catherine Kusasira, Ragga Dee, Mark Bugembe aka Butcherman, among others.
