The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, Najjanankumbi faction, has selected Keith Aggrey Akera as its flagbearer for Kilak North County in Amuru District.

He will be contesting against the incumbent, Anthony Akol, who has recently reaffirmed a strong alliance with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

Akol has been involved with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for the past few months. Recently, he was invited as a special guest to the NRM parliamentary caucus by Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua.

The development of a flagbearer in Kilak North County comes as FDC moves to fill gaps in its leadership structures at all levels ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Akera, a professional teacher, is currently serving as the Councilor V for Atiak sub-county and the district secretary for health, education and planning.

He was Akol’s aide in the previous terms, a position that exposed him politically hence, propelling him to his current positions.

Akera was unveiled on Wednesday (March 12) as his mentor’s (Akol) contender by the party deputy president for the Northern region, Hassan Kaps Fungaroo.

Fungaroo, who has recently set up camp in the Acholi sub-region to rally support for the party, noted that the defections of Akol and Amuru District Chairman Michael Lakony, among others, to the ruling party have prompted the FDC to initiate grassroots mobilization campaigns.

These campaigns aim to identify potential candidates for various electoral positions in preparation for next year’s general elections.

He emphasised the resilience of FDC, stating that the party is still strong and vibrant despite the few defections of some of its members to the ruling party.

“Opposition is not a person, but a system. New leaders will always emerge,” Fungaroo revealed as he assured FDC members and supporters of the party’s strength.

Fungaroo also revealed that they are currently filling gaps in the party leadership structures in 27 districts, including Amuru and Kitgum.
