Former Uganda army commander retired major general Mugisha Muntu has been cleared to be nominated as a presidential candidate in the 2026 General Election.

Muntu, who is the official flag-bearer of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party, was among the 27 presidential aspirants racing against time to collect the missing signatures for nominations scheduled for September 23-24 this year.

Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama last week wrote to Muntu, saying out of the submitted lists for 98 districts, only 48 districts had the required number, and the remaining 50 had less than the required number.

Section 10 (3) of the Presidential Elections Act states that a candidate shall attach to his or her nomination paper a list of names of the registered voters required under subsection 1(b); and each of those registered voters shall, append to that list his or her name, signature, physical address and voter registration number as specified in Schedule 4 to this Act (Presidential Elections Act).

Section 10 (1b) of the Presidential Elections Act states that the nomination has to be supported by not less than one hundred voters in each of at least two-thirds of all the districts in Uganda.

However, in a social media post on September 23, 2025, the party said the retired general had been cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) after submitting the necessary signatures by 7:10pm.

In another post this, September 24, morning, ANT unveiled Muntu's official campaign poster and said he will be officially nominated today at 1:00PM by the Electoral Commission.

According to ANT, the poster is a reflection of its values, vision, and commitment to deliver the change Uganda can trust. Let’s share it widely as we embark on this crucial journey together.

"Together, we move forward to deliver the CHANGE UGANDA CAN TRUST".

Three cleared to stand for presidency

EC had by yesterday cleared three presidential aspirants for the election. These are Yoweri Museveni, the National Resistance Movement flag-bearer and President of Uganda; Conservative Party aspirant Joseph Mabirizi and National Peasants Party flag-bearer Robert Kasibante.

Mabirizi’s nomination first hit a snag, but he was later cleared and nominated. Museveni was the first to be nominated in the morning before Mabirizi arrived. At exactly 12:36pm, Mabirizi arrived while being driven in a white Noah.
