The Electoral Commission is seeking extra funding of over shillings 469 billion to organise the 2026 General Election.

According to the documents before Parliament's budget committee, out of the total supplementary request, EC plans to use 19.6 billion to buy a de-duplication system that will help the commission identify multiple entries of the same individual and remove them from the voters' register.

The commission says it will use 1.2 billion to create 15,256 more polling stations and 2.54 billion to gazette polling stations.

The commission also shows that it needs 1.2 billion to publish polling stations in newspapers to inform the public at which polling station all eligible voters are supposed to cast their votes from among others.

The request was made on December 1, 2025, by acting secretary of the commission Richard Kamugisha while defending the supplementary before the budget committee in Kampala.

Kamugisha added that the commission also needs shillings 46.9 billion for the production of ballot papers and declaration of results forms for the general election, noting that the cost driver for this item is the increase in the unit cost of printing ballot papers with enhanced features such as the QR Code.

The country is set to go to the polls early January 2026, during which Ugandans are expected to vote for their leaders, including the president, Members of Parliament, mayors, councillors and LCs for a five-year term.
