Bukoto Central MP Richard Sebamala has arrived in Mbarara city ahead of the 12th Democratic Party (DP) National Delegates Conference, vowing to defy the party's electoral commission.

Speaking to the media upon his arrival today, May 30, 2025, Sebamala said he would contest for the position of DP president general, despite being disqualified from the race by the party’s electoral body.

While addressing his supporters at Asamar Hotel, Sebamala reaffirmed his commitment to challenge incumbent Norbert Mao.

This comes after Kennedy Mutenyo, Chairperson of the DP electoral commission, declared Sebamala’s nomination invalid on the grounds that he does not meet the constitutional requirement of 10 years of top leadership within the party.

Sebamala, however, dismissed the disqualification, claiming he is the right person to “rescue DP from the National Resisance Movement (NRM) party captivity.”

Security heightened

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the Asamar Hotel in Mbarara city south division as the high-stakes political event officially kicks off today and runs until June 1.

According to Mbarara deputy Resident City Commissioner (south) Robert Kanusu, the heightened security measures are intended to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the conference.

Kanusu also urged delegates to remain calm, act with objectivity, and conduct all proceedings peacefully.
