KAMPALA - Adrine Kobusingye, a businesswoman from Kyamuhunga subcounty in Bushenyi district, has been elected the new National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League national chairperson.

The 42-year-old won by a wide margin of 1,168 votes during the NRM delegates’ conference at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala on Tuesday, August 26.

She defeated six other candidates, including incumbent Lydia Wanyoto, who withdrew from the race just minutes before voting began.

Wanyoto went on to back the chairperson of the National Women’s Council, Hajjat Farida Kimbowa, who came second with 670 votes against Kobusingye’s 1,838.

The Parish Development Model deputy national coordinator, Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama, also pulled out of the contest after facing an imminent defeat, according to some observers.

Kobusingye was declared the winner by the NRM Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi.

"I'm overwhelmed with joy. This has been a free and fair election," she said.
Kobusingye’s campaign tagline was Leadership with a heart.

She told journalists that she comes from humble origins and promised to fight for women’s development.

"I'm also a farmer," she said.
