National Unity Platform (NUP) party president Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine says Dr Kizza Besigye is in high spirits at Luzira Maximum Security Prison in Kampala.
Bobi Wine said this on Friday (November 22) while addressing the media shortly after visiting Besigye who was recently remanded in prison by the General Court Martial over charges that include possessing two pistols and eight bullets.
“Dr Besigye is in good health and high spirits. Of course, he is physiologically disturbed as expected. He was picked by armed Ugandans not in uniform from Kenya and driven across the border to Makindye Military Barracks. Officially, Dr Besigye is not in Uganda,” Bobi Wine said.
The NUP leader also told the media outside the prison that Besigye told them that he was not tortured.
“But he was psychologically tortured after being bundled and squeezed into the car. We condemn this act. We are glad that the Kenyan government has so far distanced itself from this act, but the fact that it was done on Kenyan soil, we expect it to do more than talking,” he said.
Bobi Wine was with NUP secretary general David Rubongoya and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi.
Besigye and his ally, Hajji Obeid Lutale, were arrested in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on November 16, 2024, while they were heading for the launch of National Rainbow Coalition party leader Martha Karua’s book.
Besigye has been arrested on many occasions in the past and even produced in the army court over charges of terrorism and unlawful possession of firearms. He has contested against President Yoweri Museveni in four presidential elections without success.
