Molly Musiime Asiimwe, the Woman MP for Rwampara District, has withdrawn from the race seeking to retain her seat in Parliament.
The development was made public on December 10 in a widely distributed statement.
"This decision, though difficult, is made in respect to the President of the Republic of Uganda and also the NRM party Chairman, His Excellency Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for the greater good and harmonious cohesion of the party," Asiimwe revealed in her statement.
She also adds that the move is "in the spirit of fostering party cohesion and unity ahead of the 2026 elections."
Relatedly, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has revealed that the announcement comes after a reconciliation meeting convened by the First Lady, Mrs Janet Museveni, who is also Minister of Education and Sports.
The meeting between Rwampara Woman MP Asiimwe and the National Resistance Movement party flagbearer Annah Kansiime was held last Sunday in Irenga, Ntungamo.
In a post on his social site, Tayebwa also revealed that on Wednesday, he convened a follow-up consultative meeting to explain to the people of Rwampara why Asiimwe agreed to withdraw from the Rwampara Woman MP seat in favour of the flagbearer.
"Last Sunday’s and today’s engagement is a testament to the determination by the NRM fraternity to resolve in-house issues amicably for the good of the party. I was happy to see the two ladies hugging and forgiving each other. Thank you, Hon. Molly, for listening to Mama’s advice. Thank you, Mama, for helping us reconcile these two critical supporters of the NRM; it is a big step in uniting the people of Rwampara," Tayebwa stated.
He also shared photos from the Irenga meeting.
