Fishermen in Amolatar district could soon see their livelihoods improve if Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential flag-bearer James Nathan Nandala Mafabi wins the 2026 General Election.
Mafabi says he will provide government-funded fishing gear.
The FDC presidential hopeful, who is on October 10, 2025, in the districts of Amolatar and Dokolo, arrived at Namasale Landing Site aboard MV Kioga II from Zengebe Landing Site in Nakasongola at exactly 9:30am.
At his first rally held at Namasale Primary School in Namasale town council, Mafabi criticised the ruling government for what he terms as neglecting teachers’ grievances, noting that many schools in the district are affected by teacher strikes.
“We are here on a school day, yet pupils are not studying because the Government decided to separate arts and science teachers. Under my government, all teachers will receive equal and fair salaries and there will be no discrimination between arts and science teachers,” Mafabi said.
Turning to the fishing community, Mafabi promised to subsidise fishing gear, including boats and nets, to enable locals to benefit from their main source of income.
“I have been informed that to access the waters, one must pay shillings 200,000, money that ends up in individuals’ pockets. My government will not tolerate this kind of corruption and thuggery,” he vowed.
“The cry of the people on the lake is loud across the country, yet this NRM government remains silent. My government will address this immediately and ensure locals own the lake.”
The Lango region, traditionally a stronghold of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), which is not fielding a presidential candidate in this election, appears to be a new target for Mafabi’s FDC campaign.
“If the NRM has failed to fix roads in 40 years, do you think it can do it in five? Trust us for just five years. If we don’t deliver, don’t vote for us again,” Mafabi urged the crowd.
Meanwhile, Okot Moses Junior Bitek, Member of Parliament for Kioga Constituency in Amolatar district, appealed to the FDC flag-bearer to prioritise farming and irrigation in the region once elected.
“We produce sim-sim and maize, but the sun is too harsh for our crops. Since we are surrounded by water bodies, the government should establish irrigation schemes here. We also need access to affordable financing to support small-scale farmers,” Bitek said.
As Mafabi continues his campaign trail across the Lango, his promises to improve fishing, farming, and education have resonated with the residents.
The NRM camp was in the region in the first week of President Museveni’s campaigns.
