The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential hopeful, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, has promised to work on the roads of Buyende district in Uganda's east if elected president, after being forced to change vehicles along the way due to a mechanical breakdown.

Back on the campaign trail on Thursday (October 2), Nandala hit an early speed bump. His official campaign car succumbed to the effects of the dusty, potholed roads near Kasolwe Stock Farm along the Kamuli-Buyende road.
He trudged on nonetheless after switching to another vehicle.

Upon reaching Bukungu landing site, Nandala told the residents there that he will prioritise the roads in Buyende.
“I am now using another car. I came here late because my car could not reach here due to poor roads. This should be unacceptable and yet its common in the many parts of Busoga. We will focus on that first."
The FDC frontrunner reiterated that Busoga is a sleeping giant and blamed it on the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

“Busoga had Specioza Wandira Kazibwe [Africa's first female vice-president]. At her peak, she was put aside. We now had [Rebecca] Kadaga, who has served this country all her life, what have they done? Putting her aside at the time the region needs her.
"So the region now remains with one person, Mafabi. So I ask you the people of Buyende, my trust is only in you my own. If you don’t vote, the whole eastern region will be wiped out."

In August, Kadaga, a former Speaker of Parliament, lost the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) race for the female vice-chairperson to current Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea district Woman MP Anita Among.

Last month (September), Kadaga, who is also the First Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for East African Community Affairs, assured her supporters in Busoga that she still belongs to the NRM despite losing her CEC position.
"I started working for the NRM when I was still young, and I will still serve it," she said during her "homecoming" in Jinja and Kamuli districts organised by her political camp.

Meanwhile, FDC frontrunner Nandala re-echoed his manifesto of fixing the economy so that people in Buyende district can get money from fishing and farming.
He was expected to address the people of Kamuli district, before proceeding to Jinja on Friday as he winds down the Busoga sub-region trail.
