A new political chapter has begun in Adjumani district after outgoing LC5 chairperson Ben Anyama formally handed over office during a ceremony held at the district council hall, in what officials described as the first peaceful and formal transition of its kind in the district.
The handover comes after a tense electoral period marked by political clashes and divisions between rival camps supporting Anyama and his successor, John Ambayo Anyanzo.
Local leaders said the peaceful transition sends an important message of unity and reconciliation following months of political confrontation that left sections of the district divided.

The ceremony, held on May 18, 2026, was attended by political supporters, civil servants, religious and cultural leaders, security personnel and members of the public. Officials noted that previous district leaders had never formally handed over office in this manner, making the event a significant moment in Adjumani’s political history.
While delivering his speech, Anyama, who served one term as district chairperson, appreciated the people of Adjumani for supporting him during his time in office.
"Firstly, I want to thank God for the gift of life, for the people of Adjumani for giving me the opportunity to serve as the district chairperson. Today, I have officially handed over because I want peace and development to continue," Anyama said.
Call for unity
Emmanuel Okware, the deputy resident district commissioner of Adjumani, who attended the ceremony, commended the outgoing chairperson for the peaceful handover, saying it was an important step towards restoring unity and cooperation in the district.
"We have witnessed the handover. I appreciate Ben Anyama for the peaceful transition and the contributions of his era. This handover should be a stepping stone for unity and cooperation in the district towards development," Okware remarked.
The ceremony also involved the awarding of certificates by chief administrative officer Andrew Ochen to council members for outstanding performance, including Anyama.
Some community members who witnessed the event praised the outgoing chairperson for prioritising service delivery during his tenure.
Muzamil Biansi, a resident of Furua cell in Adjumani town council, credited the former LC5 chairperson for improving social services in the district.
"I'm so happy that the chairperson has left the office peacefully. He has done a lot of things for the people, especially the development of roads within the town council, the construction of school infrastructure and water connection. We shall always remember him," Biansi explained.
