West Ankole Diocese education secretary Rev. Bernard Mushabe dies

The education secretary of Uganda's Anglican West Ankole Diocese, Rev. Bernard Mushabe, has died at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.

Confirming the news, diocesan spokesperson Bright Atuha said Mushabe had been unwell since undergoing an operation in December 2024.

"He had been ill and down since his operation. Details regarding the cause of death and burial arrangements will be communicated in due course," said Atuha.

Mushabe passed on early Tuesday.

A resident of Rugarama sub-county in Sheema district, he was a senior clergyman in the Church of Uganda and seasoned educationist.

He had previously served under the Ankole Diocese as chaplain at Ntare School, one of Uganda’s leading secondary schools, where he was known for mentoring students and guiding staff.

Colleagues and Christians described him as a gifted Bible expositor, a committed preacher and an educationist with a deep understanding of linguistic approaches.

Many noted his ability to connect with young people and inspire both faith and learning.

'Big loss'

In his last role as diocesan education secretary, Mushabe coordinated and supervised church-founded schools across West Ankole Diocese.

He particularly worked closely with headteachers, education officers in the five districts of Buhweju, Rubirizi, Mitooma, Sheema and Bushenyi, and church leaders to improve academic standards and instill Christian values.

Athua said the diocese has lost a devoted servant of God and a dedicated education leader.

“This is a big loss to the Church and the education fraternity. Rev. Mushabe served faithfully and will be remembered for his commitment to education and ministry."

Aggrey Mugume, a resident of Shuuku town council in Sheema, served alongside Mushabe on the board of Ryakasinga Centre for Higher Education. He described him as “a resourceful person whose views and commanding presence always made a difference in meetings".
