Ugandans asked to be true to the values of justice, peace as Benedicto Kiwanuka is remembered

“If we are to take to heart any matters of peace, we must include justice. Peace is a function of justice. We must thus work for justice if we want to have real peace. Our God, who is just, expects us to give justice to our brethren and the rest of creation."

Masaka Catholic Diocese bishop Serverus Jjumba has asked Christians and all Ugandans to be genuine promoters of justice and peace.

He has faulted those who talk about peace but remain silent about issues of justice.

He stressed that peace cannot be realised unless issues of justice are addressed.

“If we are to take to heart any matters of peace, we must include justice. Peace is a function of justice. We must thus work for justice if we want to have real peace. Our God, who is just, expects us to give justice to our brethren and the rest of creation.

“Our aspiration for peace invokes us to be honest about where we stand on the independence of the judiciary. We cannot have peace when we have permanent political enemies. We cannot ask God for peace unless we do what it takes to end politically-motivated abductions. We cannot speak of peace unless we do what it takes to stop land grabbing and evictions. We cannot talk about peace if there is no equitable distribution of natural resources,” Jjumba says.

He was delivering his homily during the memorial mass of the late Chief Justice Benedicto Kiwanuka at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel, Rubaga in Kampala on Monday.

Kiwanuka, the first Ugandan Chief Justice, was on September 21, 1972, picked from his chambers at the High Court in Kampala by armed soldiers and he has not been seen again to date.

He was appointed Chief Justice on June 27, 1971, by former President Idi Amin, who ruled the country between 1971 and 1979 when he was toppled.

Kiwanuka is said to have been murdered by the former President Idi Amin’s regime for directing the Amin government to release a British national who was being held incommunicado by the State Research Bureau, a military intelligence agency at the time.

In his book, The Illusion of Liberation, Albert Bade states that the arrest of a British businessman, Daniel Stewart, was the root cause of the abduction and subsequent murder of Kiwanuka.

Jumba asked Christians and Ugandans in general to exercise the virtue of forgiveness, which he said, facilitates peace processes.

He lauded Ben Kiwanuka for his commitment to justice and peace and asked the people of Uganda to emulate him.

The function was dignified with the presence of the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and some members of Ben Kiwanuka’s Family.

The evening function was crowned with a memorial for Benedicto Kiwanuka, which was delivered by Prof. Spire Ssentongo from Makerere University.

The activities ran under the theme: Forgive us our sins, Grant us Peace.
