After the release of the Uganda Certificate of Education results for 2025, New Vision published a moving story on February 16, 2026, about a mother of four who returned to school, was taught by her son, and excelled.
The 46-year-old Khanifa Birungi scored a B in her project and Cs in Christian Religious Education, History, Agriculture, Geography, Biology and Physics, and Ds in English and Mathematics. Despite the challenges, her performance reflected determination and resilience.
A fast-food vendor in Katooke town council, Kyenjojo district, Birungi had long dreamed of becoming a nurse. However, she feared that her ambition would fade without financial support.

A mother of four, she continues to support her children through their own educational struggles, holding onto hope that their fortunes will improve.
Her dream took a dramatic turn on April 10, 2026, when she was awarded a full scholarship by Lyantonde School of Nursing and Midwifery in Lyantonde district.
The school’s director, Benon Mugume, said he was deeply moved after reading her story in New Vision.
“I was touched by the challenges she has overcome to complete her education,” he said. “When I learned about her aspiration to become a nurse, I felt compelled to support her in achieving that goal.”
In the days following the release of her results, Birungi had grown increasingly anxious as she waited for help that seemed unlikely to come. Now, her prayers have been answered; she will pursue her studies free of charge until she completes the course.

“I had almost lost hope of achieving my dream,” she said. “But now that opportunity is here, I will do everything possible to make it a reality,” she added.
Balancing her business, family and education will not be easy. Birungi acknowledges the sacrifices ahead, saying she must focus fully on her studies to secure a better future for her children.
She expressed deep gratitude to New Vision for highlighting her story, which ultimately led to the scholarship. She also encouraged others not to give up on their dreams, emphasising the importance of persistence and patience.
Mugume confirmed that the school will cover all her essential needs, including tuition and accommodation, while also welcoming additional support from well-wishers.
