National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential flag-bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has paid tribute to the deceased Kenyan former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as an “accomplished freedom fighter” who inspired generations across Africa.
“I join the rest of the world in sending condolences to the people of Kenya and the family of Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga. We have lost an icon in Africa,” Kyagulanyi said during a campaign rally in Namisidwa District on Thursday as he continued his tour of the Bukedi and Bugisu regions.
Kyagulanyi noted that Odinga’s lifelong struggle for justice and democracy influenced many, including himself.
“I am standing here today pursuing the same dream of freedom and justice, especially here in East Africa,” he said.
Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, died on Wednesday (October 15) while undergoing treatment at Devamatha Hospital in India.
The hospital said he collapsed during a morning walk and was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. local time following a cardiac arrest. He was 80 years old.
Odinga's remains have since been returned, and a state funeral is planned for Sunday.
Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, joins a host of other local and world leaders in commemorating the death of the Kenyan Opposition icon, including Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, world leaders Nerandra Modi of India, among others.
