A German development partner, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), has partnered with veteran politician Alice Alaso to launch a new book highlighting Uganda’s journey in advancing women’s empowerment through affirmative action.
The 121-page publication, Trials and Triumphs in the Journey of Affirmative Action Politics, was unveiled on Tuesday, March 17, at Protel Hotel in Kololo, Kampala, drawing over 80 delegates, including Members of Parliament, political party leaders, and civil society actors.
Speaking at the event, former Ethics minister Miria Matembe applauded Yoweri Museveni for what she described as his contribution to creating an enabling environment for women’s political participation.
“He created a conducive space for the women’s movement to flourish,” Matembe said, noting that the introduction of affirmative action policies significantly increased women’s representation in leadership—an achievement she said should not be overlooked.
Published with the support of KAS, the book explores Alaso’s personal and political journey through Uganda’s evolving governance landscape, shedding light on the challenges and milestones of affirmative action.
KAS Country Director for Uganda and South Sudan, Anna Reismann, who authored the foreword, described the book as a reflective piece that offers critical insights into societal transformation.

“This book holds a mirror to society, and all who seek to change it for the better should read it,” Reismann noted.
In another foreword, Perry Aritua, Executive Director of the Women’s Democracy Network – Uganda Chapter, emphasised that the publication captures one of Uganda’s most significant gender equality milestones.
The launch also featured a panel discussion on Uganda’s affirmative action journey, bringing together voices from policy, politics, youth, and civil society.
Panellists included Aritua, Dan Ogalo, Yvonne Bampara, and Ambassador Edith Sempala, who shared diverse perspectives on sustaining inclusive governance.
The event attracted notable figures such as Mugisha Muntu, leader of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Robert Kabushenga, and legislator Gerald Karuhanga.
Alaso, expressed gratitude to KAS for fully sponsoring the launch and reaffirmed her commitment to advancing education and leadership opportunities for young people through the Asianut Education Foundation.
The book launch also doubled as a fundraising drive for the foundation, which supports underprivileged but academically promising students at secondary and university levels.
