Residents of Yumbe district are in mourning following the sudden death of former district registrar for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission, Morphat Mafu.

News of Mafu’s death shocked the district, with residents, political leaders and party supporters expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a man widely described as committed, disciplined and dedicated to public service.

Mafu died on December 31, 2025, at Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital after suffering heart failure.

The NRM administrator for Yumbe district, Rasul Adiga, confirmed Mafu’s death and described it as sudden.

Adiga said they learnt on Monday (December 29) that Mafu was unwell after he admitted himself to a private clinic in town.

"I called him to ask what was happening, and he told me he had developed complications with his heart but assured me that he was getting well," said Adiga.

According to Adiga, by Wednesday (December 31), Mafu requested a referral to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital so that arrangements could be made for him to travel to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

He revealed that early on Wednesday morning, he spoke to Mafu about his health.

Adiga said the deceased told him that he was feeling better and was planning to travel to Kampala.

"I was shocked when I received a call that Mzee Mafu had collapsed when boarding an ambulance to go to Mulago, and he passed on," said Adiga.

The NRM chairman for Yumbe district, Majid Aniku, described Mafu’s death as a huge blow to the party.

He said the deceased had been a mentor to party leaders in the district, guiding them to run the party in peace, harmony and unity.

Yumbe district woman Member of Parliament, Avako Melisha Naima Gule, said the district had lost a source of wisdom and guidance.

She noted that beyond his role as registrar, Mafu had been a father figure to NRM supporters and leaders in the district, offering daily advice to promote unity and peace.

According to Adiga, burial arrangements will be communicated once finalised.
