KAMPALA - Business has been on a standstill in Nakawa along the Kampala-Jinja highway for a bigger part of today following an abrupt raid on private car bonds operating within the road reserve by a joint security team.

The operation saw many illegal car bond operators evicted and their structures demolished. The security team comprised the works ministry enforcement team, Uganda Police, and the military.

The Ministry of Works and Transport publicist, Allan Kyobe Ssempebwa, said the operation resulted from a recent directive from the Works State Minister, Musa Ecweru, who announced that the structures within the road reserve along the Nakawa–Kireka–Banda section would be demolished.

“Our teams, supported by security agencies, are undertaking compliance operations to restore and protect the road reserve and pedestrian walkways from illegal occupation and trading activities,” he said.

Ssempebwa added that the exercise was intended to improve road safety, mobility and drainage management along the corridor and safeguarding the right of way for the forthcoming Kampala–Jinja Expressway project, whose preparatory processes are in advanced stages.

He also clarified that the Kampala Capital City Authority enforcement was not in any way linked to the exercise, as had been speculated earlier.
