Police in Rukiga district in south-western Uganda were on Sunday still hunting for a driver who knocked dead a born-again Christian as she walked to church for night prayers.

In a statement, Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate described the incident as a hit-and-run fatal road crash.

He said a female adult identified as Eunice Natukunda, a born-again Christian and resident of Kariba Cell, Karogwa parish in Bukinda town council, lost her life in the incident.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on May 22, 2026, at around 9:40 pm at Kakatunda trading centre along the Kabale-Ntungamo highway.

Maate said the deceased was walking along the roadside from her home in Kariba heading for overnight prayers in Bukinda.

“When she reached Kakatunda centre, almost crossing the road, a speeding vehicle from the direction of Kabale knocked her dead on spot,” the statement reads in part.

Police officers from Rukiga later visited the scene, documented the evidence and carried out an examination before the body was handed over to relatives for burial.

According to Maate, the vehicle and its driver were still at large, but he assured relatives that efforts were ongoing to identify and recover the vehicle for prosecution.

Maate appealed to anyone with information that could lead to the recovery of the vehicle to volunteer it so that appropriate action can be taken.
