A woman has been detained by the territorial Police in the Mayuge district on suspicion of beating her six-year-old niece to death over poor school performance.
Twenty-two-year-old Aisha Byogero from Mauma A village in Busakila sub-county allegedly physically tortured her niece, Mariam Mutesi last Wednesday (July 19) at about 6pm.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement that the suspect was staying with the child, who was in Primary One.
She allegedly reprimanded the victim after school for performing poorly, and when the girl called out for help, the neighbours reportedly came to her rescue.
“She was shortly pronounced dead at the nearby clinic upon arrival," added Enanga.
He warned people against using cruel punishments on children and that offenders would face the law.
“Therefore, all parents and guardians are advised to desist from corporal punishments and other forms of physical punishments."
