SOROTI - Soroti city authorities say they will modify the streetlights with a provision of spikes.

The move, according to the authorities, is expected to curb vandalism of street light batteries and panels by vandals, which has recently shot up.

Deputy City Clerk James Obore on March 20, 2024, said the city invested shillings 2.55 billion into street lighting on Ediegu Road. However, Obore said the lights were vandalised yet the road is a black spot where criminals hide to attack people.

Meanwhile, city engineer Robert Kairu said it is disheartening that some locals still afford to vandalise streetlights which require millions of shillings to install.

Vandalism of critical public infrastructure is one of the thorny challenges that all urban centres and cities including Kampala are grappling with.

However, efforts to curb the vice, which has cost the taxpayer billions of shillings, has not yielded positive results.
