'We need Jesus in Parliament': Gulu Archbishop calls for Christ-centred leadership

Speaking during Easter Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Gulu city, the prelate prayed for the resurrection of Christ to wash away the "sins and confusions" of the 2026 general elections and instil integrity in the country's leaders.

The Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese, Raphael P’Mony Wokorach, has delivered a sharp critique of Uganda's political climate, asserting that only a Christ-centred transformation in Parliament and the civil service can heal the nation from post-election division.

Speaking during Easter Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Gulu city, the prelate prayed for the resurrection of Christ to wash away the "sins and confusions" of the 2026 general elections and instil integrity in the country's leaders.

A call for divine governance

Archbishop Wokorach did not mince words regarding the state of national politics, specifically targeting the legislative arm of government.

He appealed for a radical shift in leadership quality, stating that the spirit of Christ is desperately needed within the halls of Parliament to combat growing vices.

The Archbishop noted that the legislature is currently plagued by "confusion, hatred, and segregation."

“We need Jesus in our Parliament because there is so much confusion and segregation. I pray to God to guide all leaders in Uganda to know Him and lead as He wants," said Archbishop Raphael P’Mony Wokorach.

He offered a special prayer for all public officials, urging them to lead according to God’s will rather than personal or political interests.

While acknowledging that the Holy Spirit prevented widespread bloodshed during the recent elections, he prayed for the cleansing of the animosity that the polls left behind.

The Archbishop reminded the congregation that the relative peace enjoyed during the 2026 elections was a confirmation of God's power.

He emphasised that "no one can compare themselves with God," and that the Almighty’s protection was the only reason certain "confusions" did not escalate into a national tragedy.

Mentoring the next generation of Christians

Turning to the family unit, the prelate began the service by blessing children at the altar.

Wokorach issued a stern caution to parents who neglect their children’s spiritual growth, warning that many young people attend church without learning because they lack parental guidance.

He urged families to "wake up" and pray together to secure the future of the faith.

The mandate of the resurrection

Proclaiming the victory of Christ with the words "Yesu Kristo otyeko Ocer!", Wokorach explained that the resurrection is a call to action.

He challenged Christians to be proud of the Cross and to use this Easter period to prioritise God as the "light to our destinies.”
