KAMPALA - As the grand celebration of the 100th anniversary of Lubaga Cathedral gets closer, more Christians are donating money towards the preparation of the function.

During the weekly fundraising function that took place at the cathedral on Wednesday (August 13, 2025), Christians from the various parishes in Wakiso Vicariate, led by their Episcopal Vicar Fr. Jude Makanga, delivered a donation of sh60m towards the function.

The money was received by Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere and organising committee chairperson, Eng. Pius Mugalaasi.

Archbishop Ssemogerere thanked the Christians of Wakiso Vicariate for their generosity and goodwill towards the archdiocese.  He asked them to give more financial support towards the renovation of the cathedral and the general preparation of its centenary celebration.

“The pioneer missionaries of the Society of White Fathers who built this cathedral did a great work. This Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in the world. Even the visitors from Europe, the US and other parts of the world admire it. We thank the local Christians, particularly Matayo Mugwanya, who worked with the missionaries to put up this great house of God. Let’s reciprocate their determination and goodwill by maintaining its glorious beauty and sanctity,” Ssemogerere said.

Fundraising committee chairperson John Fred Kiyimba Freeman said so far, shillings one billion had been raised. He urged the Christians to donate more money so that all the 2.4 billion that was budgeted for the function is realised.

Mugalaasi also assured the Christians that the cathedral would be fully renovated and its proposed two-level parking fully done by October 26, the day of the cathedral’s centennial celebration.

Apart from the Christians of Wakiso Vicariate, there were also individuals and representatives of organisations who graced the function and donated money. Among them was businessman Deo Kasozi Walukaali (shillings two million) and Pax Insurance Company Ltd (five million).

At the close of the function, the Christians participated in the Eucharistic celebration presided over by  Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere.
